21st August 2009 – Healthy eating kicks off

Streetcage Sports CIC (Community Interest Company) and NHS Wirral joined forces last week to deliver a three day Soccer School at West Kirby Residential School in Wirral.

The Soccer School was delivered by qualified coaches who use football as a way of encouraging children to enjoy themselves while raising awareness of the positive effects of physical exercise on their health, including the impacts of obesity and nutrition. The project was funded by Wirral Council for Voluntary Services (CVS). 

NHS Wirral Health Challenge staff also ran workshops providing advice on nutrition and healthy eating. Young people had the opportunity to sample fruit kebabs and take part in discussions around the dangers of eating too much junk food.  Free health checks were offered to parents and families, as well as one-to-one advice about lifestyle changes.   

Over 70 children and their parents are expected to attend the Soccer School after its two week run, and it appears so far that the event will be a huge success. 

Hannah Hughes, NHS Wirral’s Outreach Team Leader, said: “This has been a tremendous way to get some key messages over to young people and for parents and families to learn more about the importance of a healthy lifestyle.”
