Streetcage Sports have now set up a ‘Sport & Fitness’ team who’s sole aim is to once again use the medium and attraction of sports to tackle health issues in communities across the North West. The team uses ‘Sport’ to tackle a number of issues that the government and local NHS providers across the country call as a major issues and ties in with the governments ‘Change for life’ campaign.

Our clinical coaching team is co-ordinated by Managing Director and NHS Wirral Community Health Advisor Matthew Shannon. Matthew has worked extremely hard to develop a programme that ties in a ‘Physical activity’ based programme for youths along side ‘workshops’ based around delivering key health messages not only with children but their family also.

This programme is different from our Anti-social behaviour ‘urban’ approach and carries more of a ‘clinical’ approach to delivery to tie in with other NHS programmes. Our coaches are dressed in white polo t-shirts displaying both Streetcage Sports & NHS logos and youths are referred in through community health teams as appose to the Street in other programmes. Our coaches are supported by experts who can offer advice to family members on key health issues and make some referrals to various ‘NHS support groups’ (pic of me and Rob O’Donnell)

Our clinical team have been working extremely close with NHS Wirral to build a solid relationship that will see the company work closely with the ‘Health Action team’ to tackle community health issues. Through the delivery of Sport across Merseyside, NHS teams and John Moore’s students can carry out a number of clinical assessments with youths and give clear advice and guidance to parents and coaches.

Our sessions our multi-sport activity sessions incorporating fun and technical coaching session to improve overall fitness and tackle health inequalities of children and teenagers. The sessions are a combination of high and low impact aerobic work through the fun of playing multi-sports replacing the pain of exercise with the experience of hitting that winning run, making that winning shot or scoring that last minute goal. This experience means that children make a positive association with exercise which they can take into their adult lives.

Streetcage Sports CIC and local NHS teams can continue to monitor any health programme and complete a full report and evaluation on life style changes through ‘subjective’ and ‘objective’ evaluations.

Mini Health trainers & Family support

We all know that the best way to access parents and family members is through the influence of children. It is a clear fact that 90% of the ‘health issues’ in youths are related to the household and the habits of parents and families. Streetcage Sports CIC has developed its new ‘Mini – health trainer’ programme, which sees youths involved in ‘health projects’ taking home key messages to parents and family members, which may include:

- Mental health & motivation courses
- Smoking cessation clinics
- Healthy cookery courses
- Physical exercise programmes
- Health trainer support

Parents and family members can receive one to one or group support with making key life style changes, which in turn will make key changes within children and young people.

Children receive certificates and prizes to acknowledge their contribution to health and receive their ‘Mini health trainer’ status in a presentation. Any children that refer family members to a NHS programme will go into a prize draw that may see them win prizes such as sports equipment, vouchers and much more.

Streetcage Sports will be offering the ‘Mini – health trainer’ programme to schools, youth centres, PCT’s and communities across the North west in 2009 onwards.
