Breathe – Part of Regenda Housing & Maritime Housing

The Klondyke area of Bootle was chosen to form one of the nine Housing Market Renewal Pathfinders in England to tackle the problems of housing market failure, mainly in the private sector. This includes housing in poor condition and large scale abandonment in areas where there are high levels of empty properties or unpopular housing. The area was one that had undergone drastic change from being an attractive and affluent suburb of Liverpool, to one that was affected by poor housing, crime, anti social behaviour and a multitude of environmental issues including vermin, fly tipping and graffiti. To tackle this, a remedy of new housing and regeneration was prescribed.

In 2004, BReathe+ started working with members of the Klondyke community to deliver physical, social and economic regeneration to the neighbourhood. The project centres around large scale decants of residents to make possible the physical redevelopment of the area whilst developing regeneration initiatives by working in partnership with various local agencies and stakeholders so that we can help create and sustain a positive living environment for generations to come. Projects already carried out by the team range from environmental clean-ups, surgeries with various agencies, community consultation events and fun days, crime prevention initiatives, youth diversionary activities and partnership working to develop community capacity building projects.

Breathe has been the main provider of funding for Streetcage Sports’s new Street football project based at Derby Park, Bottle.
