March 2008 - Teenagers Challenged to Streetcage Sports

South Liverpool Housing and Youthpoint will be taking the lead in organising youth activities in Speke and Garston on Friday and Saturday nights.  Tackling anti-social behaviour and under-age drinking, a portable “cage” will be the focus of football training for young people.

The training has been organised in response to requests for activities on weekend evenings from tenants and SLH’s Junior Board.  It offers professional football coaching, skills and tricks and takes place within walls, allowing spectators to watch.

Christine Flanagan, SLH Youth Co-ordination Officer explained, “This is a brilliant opportunity for young people to enjoy themselves in a positive and challenging way.  The situation at weekends for teenagers in South Liverpool is desperate so hopefully this project will continue and make our community even better”.

A team of youth workers from Youth Point and SLH’s Junior Board will be out on the streets inviting as many young people as possible to join in.  Lynnie Williams, Youthpoint Manager, said, “Streetcage Sports is for everyone – boys and girls - and there will also be centre based activities for those who don’t want to do the football”.

The youngsters will be challenged and inspired by professional coaches from Streetacage Soccer.  After a programme of summer activities last summer, SLH received 37% fewer youth ASB referrals than the previous year and it is hoped this project will have a similar impact.

Lynnie adds, “We’ve wanted to provide youth activities at the weekend for a long time but have lacked the resources- only the funding from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund has made this possible.  Hopefully the popularity of Streetcage Sports will show the need for weekend youth activities that are permanent.”
